Description

The ideal candidate for the Construction Polymers Formulating Chemist of the BASF Dispersions and Pigments Group will:

Develop formulations for the use of BASF Polymers and Chemicals in the Construction Industry.

Have an advanced knowledge of construction related formulations, applications, and technologies.

Contribute by developing and implementing new innovations and improvements to the same - particularly those of interest to the EDC business and customer base.

Additional skills would include:

Identify and conceive of ways to improve current products and processes by analyzing their performance, practically or theoretically, using available scientific and patent information.

Formulate and execute self-conceived or assigned technical or research projects, complex in nature, to demonstrate the technical advantages of new or innovative products or processes either individually or as a member of a team.

Devises tests, procedures and experiments, statistically designed if appropriate, in order to execute or assist in execution of technical and research projects.

Writes comprehensive reports and evaluations on data obtained from experimentation and, if necessary, orally present observations, conclusions and recommendations to persons concerned

Prepares invention records on sole or joint inventions in areas of the company's interests

Direct and provide required training for the work of one or more technicians.

Cooperate with technical services/manufacturing in furnishing technical assistance to demonstrate the usefulness of Company products, and/or to solve field or other problems that might affect Company relations with customers or prospective customers.

Plans and carries out the original part of exploratory self-conceived projects after which, if they receive proper approval, become part of the planned program.

Contributes and adheres to Safety, Environmental standards of the Corporation, Division and location.

Stays current with developments and innovations in the areas of polymer science/technology.

Develops and maintains expert knowledge in the scientific field related to the program in hand, by reading journals, patents and internal reports, by attending conferences, courses and seminars.

Performs special projects as requested and/or assigned.

The successful candidate:

Plans and develops assigned work programs with minimal supervision.

Participates in business, manufacturing or other cross-functional teams to plan and monitor the overall project portfolio.

Functions in a highly diverse and ever-changing technological and business environment.

Solves problems in conjunction with Technical Service or Manufacturing.

Qualifications

*
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with 5 years minimum practical laboratory experience, to include 3 years of construction chemistry and formulation required. Masters Degree with 3 years minimum construction chemistry and formulation experience preferred.

* Basic knowledge of polymer/ emulsion technology (synthesis, manufacture, applications, etc.) is beneficial.
* Ability to utilize computer technology.
* Ability to organize time and be able to perform multiple routine and non-routine tasks in multiple functional areas, and to fully and professionally document (formal reports) and communicate key project work, in the form of presentations (verbal and written).
* Ability to adapt and be flexible to changing priorities.
* Ability to prepare laboratory documents (JSA's, Safety, ISO, Standard Test Procedures, etc.).
* Ability to train and/or direct technicians as a project leader.

Description

This position supports the development of new business opportunities and support of ongoing business. The individual in this position visits customers with the sales force, and independently as needed. Designs and provides technical guidance for lab projects and provides technical support for customer applications. Consults with colleagues, and Applications and Analytical Lab in initiating, coordinating and supervising projects for the development of our product lines in Pressure Sensitive Label and Graphics and Tape Adhesives, and Industrial Adhesives, and assists in the development of sales. Interacts with R&D, QC, and Manufacturing personnel as well as International colleagues in the development and maintenance of products.

Qualifications

Minimum BS Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field, combined with a minimum of 10 years compounding experience in the below adhesive application fields. Advanced degree preferred. BASF recognizes Institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent.

Fields:

a) Water-borne Acrylic adhesives for Pressure Sensitive Label and or Graphics applications. Fewer years of experience acceptable with an

advanced degree.

b) Water-borne Acrylic and/or SBR adhesives for Industrial Adhesives used in Packaging Lamination or Product Assembly applications. Fewer

years of experience acceptable with an advanced degree.

*
A solid technical knowledge of adhesive application/coating technologies is required. Additional experience with water-borne Acrylic and SBR polymers for non-woven binders desired.

*
Strong communication skills are required, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Description

The Product Marketing Manager is responsible for the marketing and product management of Fiberbonding materials. Major position responsibility is the creation and implementation of a strategic business plan by market segment, which will achieve SBU objectives. The Product Marketing Manager interfaces with all key functional areas, including Sales, Technical Service, R&D, Manufacturing, Cross Functional Industry Teams, and Marketing Communications. Critical external interfaces include Industry/ Market associations Trade organizations.

Responsibilities

* Together with the Business Manager, identifies, develops, implements and communicates the strategies, plans and programs needed to profitably achieve the business goals of the Dispersions for Fiber Bonding business unit. Participates in operational and strategic planning processes.
* Develops a market segment pricing/promotion strategy and manages volume/product pricing of market segments/customers to achieve profitability targets. Including the management of margin through both pricing and cost control measures.
* Understands technology, trends, and competitors in the Fiberbonding/Nonwovens industry through customer relationships, market research, membership in external Industry Groups, and BASF cross-divisional industry teams. Develops appropriate product portfolio strategies which support the business strategy. Initiates and leads activities to implement product portfolio strategies.
* Monitors segment results and performance on a monthly basis. Analyzes deviations from operating plan and takes corrective actions as appropriate.
* Develops and implements a marketing communications strategy that supports the business strategy. Activities include trade shows, industry presentations, press releases, trade journal articles and advertisements. The individual ensures a significant presence in the marketplace by representing BASF in national and regional industry associations and seminars.
* Develops and maintains relationships with technical and business counter-parts in Europe, Asia and South America to foster glabal communication and allow greater participation in the development of global business strategies and assessment of new development projects and business cases.

Qualifications

* Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Business Management or related field is required. Advanced degree in business preferred.
* At least 10 years experience in marketing, product management or technical service of Nonwoven binders is required.
* Knowledge of multiple nonwoven technologies (e.g. Durable, Consumer, Roofing construction and practical applications) preferred.
* Individual must possess marketing acumen, problem solving capability, initiative and creativity. Individual must be able to effectively influence others and work in multi-functional & diverse teams.
* Individual must have excellent planning, organizing, and work management skills in order to effectively prioritize activities. Excellent communication skills (presentation, verbal, written) are required.
* Strong interpersonal, organizational, negotiating and teamwork skills are required.
