Description

The Senior Research Scientist is responsible for collaborating with business unit personnel to solve customer problems and generate innovative technical solutions that support business growth. More specific duties include:

* Designs/develops new high-performance Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) products for a variety of applications;
* Works closely with manufacturing to optimize the production parameters of TPU products and to assist the scale up efforts of new products;
* Stays current with scientific and technical advances and explores new chemistries, structures and processing conditions for new and unconventional applications;
* Establishes structure-property relationships in TPU's and provides technical support to manufacturing and customers;
* Establishes and maintains close working relationships with colleagues across the globe;
* Prepares technical papers/presentations and conducts technical training to customers and BASF personnel;
* Supports product launch efforts in coordination with sales & marketing team.

Results are to be achieved through experimental work using the Innovation Chain process and working closely with colleagues in the TPU business to achieve significant potential sales and contribution margins impact and to develop new and improved TPU products to drive business growth.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

* Bachelors degree in chemical engineering, polymer chemistry, polymer engineering or equivalent technical discipline with at least 5 years industrial laboratory experience or PhD new graduate
* Solid knowledge of polymer characterization methods and structure/property relationships
* Experience with at least 2 of the following: DMA, TGA, DSC, Rheometer, & FTIR

Preferred Qualifications:

* Hands on experience in product development of thermoplastic elastomers(TPE)
* Working knowledge of injection molding &/or extrusion technologies & processing
* Experience formulating & processing thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU)
* Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word & PowerPoint and have the ability to learn new applications quickly
* Proficiency in German

Description

The Pilot Plant Engineer has the responsibility to develop safe, robust, and economical processes for new polymers. This position has responsibility for supporting new resin/emulsion product development, scaling-up and supporting new processes in manufacturing and leading SGO Technology development initiatives

Specifically:

- Develop, demonstrate, and recommend processes and equipment for new and existing products. This is needed to provide customers with consistent, useful products.

o Design and analyze appropriate experiments to support product and process development by making strong use of scientific method, critical thinking, and statistical approaches.

o Identify, specify, install, and start-up new equipment as needed to support new product/process development.

o Verify the safety of experiments being run and the safety of personnel involved.

o Work with product development teams and Pilot Plant staff to identify goals and timing of work.

o Maintain clear and concise records of the technical investigations. Prepare technical reports and communicate key findings.

o Identify and use appropriate outside experts, suppliers and scientific literature.

o Work with colleagues in BASF SE and other groups in BASF to apply know-how and technology to the problem at hand.

o Lead SGO Technology development/exploration

- Support Manufacturing Operations. This is needed to ensure steady product stream which meets quality standards.

o Use appropriate engineering methodologies to scale-up and develop new processes to Manufacturing.

o Member of the QCOC (Quality, Cost Optimization Committee) team, representing R&D to determine appropriate approaches for handling QDRs (Quality Deviation Reports) and specification changes.

o Conceptualize, verify, and implement Manufacturing optimizations, capacity improvements, and quality initiatives.

- Support Product Development Teams. This is required to develop new products and expand BASF technology.

o Serve on and participate in interdisciplinary product development teams and provide engineering guidance.

o Conceptualize, develop, and execute research approaches to solve complex product development problems.

o Coordinate Pilot Plant activities to support project needs.

o Communicate with internal customers by providing technical reports based on the analysis of samples produced in the pilot plant.

- Support Pilot Plant Operations. This is needed to provide tools necessary for reliable scale-up.

o Learn proper use of Pilot Plant equipment. Recommend and document operation and maintenance procedures.

o Maintain and improve functionality of Pilot Plant database.

o Help trouble shoot and provide technical support for SGO resin Pilot Plant.

o Help train staff and direct activities of assigned technicians.

o Operate high temperature polymerization equipment

o Trouble-shoot and program control software and associated equipment.

Qualifications

PhD Degree in Chemical Engineering or Masters with 3-5 years experience. Polymer reaction engineering and processing equipment knowledge required. Must be a good team player and be willing to work with equipment. Must be able to trouble-shoot and operate control software.

The role of the Market Development Specialist is to facilitate/achieve new profitable business (EBITDA margin) through innovation, new business development, and new projects to meet global and regional strategy goals within the BASF Foams business. Main responsibilities include:

* Sales Responsibilities: Sales responsibilities include working with sales management and technical service team to achieve aggressive business targets set forth in multi year operational plan. New product launch execution is an integral part of the future success within the business. Ability to extract value pricing from customers in volatile raw materials market is a critical component of this role. Adopt team approach between Market Development and Sales Team for negotiation strategies and sales planning. Coordinate regional sales follow up activity to Market Development Specialist lead generation, so business is directed to partner converters and success tracked.
* Global Projects and Initiatives: Support and leadership for global innovation initiatives (dotted line reporting to Global Innovation Manager). Ability to articulate vision, strategy and tactics of the NA Foams Business to both Regional and Global leadership is critical. The NA Market Development Specialist will support information exchange of best practices with international foams team.
* Innovation Management: Generation of business/product innovation though value chain penetration, customer workshops and pull through concepts, forming strategic alliances/partners at architect, system supplier, general contractor, and cross-RBU level for innovation pipeline, sales follow-up activity, proposal writing and close. Accessing global organizational tools such as marketing, sales, technical, corporate and senior management, so G-Business' full knowledge is enabled and utilized.
* Financial: Financial responsibilities including contributing to profitable growth for the Foams Forecast includes: Volume: lbs Revenue: $M CM1: $M EBIT: $M.
* Marketing: Access and distribute selling tools (third party proof sources, brochures, press releases) created by global marketing department to system suppliers and converters for architect penetration. Use AIA presentations developed by marketing to use and present for use by systems suppliers. Aid marketing in data collection for their development of regional marketing strategy for new value added foams products. Understand market attractiveness, competitive forces, and value pricing models developed by marketing. Support marketing by executing new product launch programs. Provide feedback to marketing on current product issues and demands by converters and system suppliers for improvements.
* Project Generation: Lead Business Development Managers in using a market pull-through approach. This means accessing key influencers, describing value propositions and forming a link to and specification of BASF product innovations for greater profit and differentiation.
* Industry Knowledge: Team of Market Development Specialists will work closely with building and construction (insulation) industry advocates. Support of sustainability and promotion of BASF B&C Sales and Sustainability initiatives (CBE) are other aspects of the role.

The position requires between 25 and 50% travel.

Qualifications

* Bachelors Degree in Business or Marketing is required. BASF recognizes Institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent.
* Masters Degree in Business or Marketing is desired.
* Candidate must have 3-5 years experience in the Construction Business.
* 8-10 Years of professional business experience within the framework of a large matrix organization.
* Proven experience in sales and marketing, managing cross business unit assignments and working on global business teams along with excellent professional skills in dealing with both internal and external customers on a global basis.
* Outstanding organizational skills are a must and a strong foundation in sales, marketing, and strategic decision making are required to demonstrate success.
* Exceptional motivation and ability to develop, negotiate, and manage partner programs, while motivating a core of sales/marketing professionals to achieve and exceed business initiatives.
